Necessity was the mother of invention—and our company. While working on a plumbing project in 1951, Lloyd Cherne mistakenly installed an access tee that had a smaller diameter opening than the correct cleanout tee and therefore could not get his cast iron plug to fit. Lloyd thought there had to be a better solution than ripping out three stories of cast iron pipe in order to replace the tee with the correct size. He proceeded to affix an ordinary valve stem to a rubber playground ball and the Test-Ball® idea was conceived. Cherne Industries was founded shortly thereafter in 1953. Cherne is recognized as an industry leader throughout the world, selling pipe plugs and testing equipment from Minneapolis to Madrid. In 1998, Cherne demonstrated a commitment to quality and continuous improvement of the management system by achieving the ISO 9001 registration. Cherne is the only domestic pipe plug manufacturer to achieve this certification.
